8th Martyrs’ Day: Honouring the Fallen Heroes

PRESS RELEASE UNLF/DOP/PRNo.074/2025   |   Date: 18-05-2025

On this 18th of May 2025, as we mark the 8th Martyrs’ Day, we reflect on the history of Manipur — a once sovereign and independent nation that thrived for centuries, known for its unique identity among Southeast Asian countries. This independence was forcibly taken away in 1949 when Manipur was annexed into the Dominion of India, leading to the erosion of our people’s rights, identity, and national pride.

In response to this loss, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) launched its struggle in 1964 with the aim of reclaiming our lost sovereignty through the National People’s Democratic Revolution. Since then, the UNLF has remained committed to this mission, driven by the collective will of a people determined to free themselves from colonial domination.

Paying Tribute to Our Heroes

Today, the party pays heartfelt tribute to all those who have fought and sacrificed for the cause of Manipur’s freedom — leaders, freedom fighters, officers, volunteers, and countless others who have stood steadfast in this struggle. We honour the memory of every soul who has laid down their life for the liberation movement. Their courage and dedication are the foundation of our fight, and their legacy continues to inspire us.

As we commemorate this day, we remember the more than 380 brave UNLF cadres who have given their lives for our collective future. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and we remain forever indebted to them.

Our Commitment

On this solemn occasion, the UNLF reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the path of revolution until the freedom of our homeland is fully restored.

Commemoration Events

Commemoration events were held across MPA brigades, battalions, and the Central Headquarters, with participation from the Central Committee led by the Acting Chairman, alongside MPA personnel and party members. The UNLF also expresses its deep gratitude to all who offered floral tributes during the ceremony at Nongpok Sanjenbam, organized by the Observation Committee formed by the families of our martyrs.

We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who participated in the remembrance events held across different locations. Your continued support and solidarity strengthen our liberation movement.
